What are the Cancun Safeguards?
A system for providing information on how the safeguards are being addressed and respected is one of the elements to be developed by developing country Parties implementing REDD+ activities.
In November 2010, during the 16th session of the Conference
of the Parties (COP-16) to the United Nations Framework Convention
on Climate Change (UNFCCC), it was decided that Parties implementing
REDD Plus activities are to promote and support the seven safeguards
in accordance with national circumstances and respective capabilities.
These Safeguards, later called the 'Cancun Safeguards', were laid out
in paragraph 2 of Appendix I to
Decision 1/CP.16
